Whether on the bus or walking through campus, a majority of people rely on their headphones to get them through the day.
But what is playing through those headphones? Is it an artist you know, or one you have yet to discover?
In a time filled with new music, there are many artists on Spotify and Apple Music waiting to be streamed. Iowa State students shared some of their favorite artists that they feel have not yet been discovered, and why they support them.
A group of brothers who began performing together in 2005, AJR is a pop-indie band. Nicole Stout, junior in environmental science, counts herself as a fan. “Society right now is focusing more on who is creating music than how the music sounds or is put together and I think that’s backwards. AJR has a lot of talent and a lot of potential when it comes to a music career – people just need to notice it,” she said. With the group producing, writing, and releasing their own music, they stand for independence in the music industry. Their latest album, The Click is out now.
If you’re looking for pop-country music, Ballerini is the artist for you. She is the first artist in country music history to have her first three singles reach number one on country radio, and was nominated for the coveted Best New Artist award at the 59th annual Grammy Awards. Her sophomore album Unapologetically is out now, and features the hit single, “Legends.”
Hailing from Canada, Grimes is an electronic based singer-songwriter. With four albums under her belt, her songs have been listed on year end “best of” lists from Rolling Stone and Billboard. Kirstie Peters, an international student from the United Kingdom, said that she has been listening to Grimes for three years. “She makes me so happy,” Peters said. “It’s not often that you see women in the electronic industry, and she kills it.” Her latest release is titled Art Angels.
A four-piece British pop group, Little Mix rose to fame following their 2011 X-Factor U.K. victory. Since then, the group has released four albums, which included their hit singles “Black Magic” and “Shout Out to My Ex.” The group supported Ariana Grande on the U.S. leg of her Dangerous Woman tour this past spring.Their latest single, “Reggaeton Lento” with the Latin group, CNCO, is out now.
